Dieting for the Right Reasons

Dieting for the Right Reasons
When it comes to dieting, far too often we take those first steps towards weight loss bliss for what we later determine are all the wrong reasons. Ultimately however, if your reason works for you there is no truly wrong reason to diet. The trick is in finding the reason that will actually work for you.

I’ve seen all kinds of excellent motivators when it comes to dieting and taking your dieting seriously. One of the more common reasons is to lose weight. This is as good of a reason as any. Some want to get back into the size 5 jeans they wore in high school while others would simply like to be able to look in the mirror once again without feeling guilt. For some this is a simple matter of vanity and for others it is finally managing to deal with what has become a lifelong problem. If you find the inspiration you need to be successful with your dieting this time as opposed to others, then that is the perfectly plausible and acceptable reason for you to diet.

Other reasons for dieting include a desire to be more physically fit. Some of us have a deep and abiding desire to live as long as possible and firmly believe that the best possible method for accomplishing this goal is to live the healthiest life possible. This is another excellent reason for losing weight and getting into shape. If it works for you that is. The thing to remember is that every person is going to have to find their very own motivation deep within.

Yet another great reason is to have the energy you need to keep up with your little ones. This is one of the most heartbreaking side effects for most when it comes to obesity. There is simply no energy left over at the end of the day to enjoy doing things with your precious little ones who are young for such a very short amount of time. You desperately want to be able to build those precious memories with them but absolutely have no energy with which to do so. If that isn’t bad enough you probably (if you are considered morbidly obese) have noticed that many of the simplest activities with your children often bring you physical pain that is the direct result of your weight.

Revenge is a dish that is best served cold and another excellent motivator for some when it comes to dieting and taking off those pesky pounds. Losing a great deal of weight takes time in many cases so you must be able to maintain your motivation even when things are going rough along the way. The path to a new body is not an easy path. This is for those who have some serious emotional healing to do and the best revenge for old slights and wounds is to come back more beautiful than ever before. If this motivation is what it takes for you to take off the pounds then this is the motivation to which you should cling.

Religion is another common weight loss motivation. Some people believe the body should be treated as a temple. There is nothing wrong with this philosophy at all, though it takes some us longer to find our way to that line of thinking than others. Religion and faith are powerful motivators, as they have been known to bring healing to those in need by the power of their faith or their prayers. If your faith can give you the will power and strength you need in order to reach your dieting and weight loss goals then by all means lean on your faith and hold it close.

No matter what motivation you have for dieting and losing weight if you find it is no longer working for you, then you need to find another motivator quickly. Without proper motivation it is quite unlikely that you will ever meet your weight loss goals.

Helping you with Healthy Aging

Wouldn’t it be great if we could go to a fountain of youth and stay young forever? Yet, we all have to face the fact of getting old, since it’s a part of life. We have nil control over aging, since each year, you will get older on your birthday. Until we are no longer, able to be here on earth we have to work to have a degree of control over healthy aging. Nevertheless, you have choices, which include some of the things you can do to help you feel younger. Do you recall that saying you are only as old as you feel? If so then take care of yourself so that you will feel younger than you are.

What are some of the things I can do to feel younger?
You have several choices, which includes exercise and diet. This will make you feel a lot better as you start aging. You have to eat three meals a day, which your family doctor can help you decide on the right diet for you. Then while you are at the doctors you might want to ask him/her what kind of exercises you can do.

Walking is a good exercise to do, but swimming is the best exercise that you can do as long as you swim in fresh water not a pool. The bleach in the water isn’t good for you. Swimming pools are great however, since you can keep them as clean as you wish, providing you have your own pool. Remember when you start out exercising, take it slow and be careful so you do not harm your self. You can also take vitamins to help you as well. Vitamins will help the boost your mood. Vitamins will supply ingredients that boost your energy so that you can do what you want to do in life. You want to stay active to live in healthy aging. Some people are too busy to incorporate activities into their life to keep them healthy. Don’t let this be you.

Socialize with people and visit different places, doing things that you have not done but always wanted to do in life can help. Perhaps you can take a trip to Paris or England.

What are some of the things I need to stay way from?
Some of the things you may want to stay from are unwarranted stress. Stress will wear you down. Stress can affect your health, which in turn you feel ill. In fact, unwarranted stress is not good for the heart. Stress will make you feel depressed also, which shows stress is not good for the mind.

Depression is not good for you either this is another thing you will want to stay away from if you are equipped to avoid it. You will want to stay away from people that will bring you down in life. You need someone that will help uplift you, not wear you down.

Remember when you want to stay younger you have to stay healthy in order to do that you have to exercise, eat right and stay as active as you can. Adhering to the golden rules will help you to maintain and be healthy. Also, remember to visit your family doctor before starting diets, exercise or taking supplements and vitamins. If you rely on over-the-counter medicines to treat colds, consult with your doctor first. What you take may be what costs your life later.

Some over-the-counter medications are responsible for increasing the risks of heart disease, prostate cancer and so on. In fact, some supplements are responsible for these illnesses as well.

Diet, But Know Your Fats!

Margarine, butter, other spreading fats and low fat spreads, cooking oils, oil-based salad dressings, mayonnaise, cream, fried foods including fried chips, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, pastries, cake, puddings, ice-cream, rich sauces and gravies are all in this food group because they contain fat.

Like carbohydrates, fats contain the elements Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. Fats are used as a source of energy: they are also stored beneath the skin helping to insulate us against the cold. Do not think that by avoiding fat in your diet you will stay thin and elegant! If you eat too much carbohydrate and protein, you will convert some of it into fat, so you will put on weight. You must balance the amount of energy containing foods with the amount of energy that you use when you take exercise

Soft drinks (not diet drinks), sweets, jam and sugar, as well as foods such as cakes, puddings, biscuits, pastries and ice-cream.

It is essential to have a small amount of fat in the diet, but eat foods containing fat sparingly as they are high in energy. Look out for reduced fat or low fat alternatives (by law any food labelled as low fat must contain no more than 3g of fat per 100g). Fats can be divided into saturates, monounsaturates and polyunsaturates.

Limit consumption of saturates, associated with animal products, cakes, biscuits and pastries, to reduce risk of heart disease. To cut down on saturates, make use of the information on nutrition panels on food products, cut off visible fat from meat and poultry, choose lower fat meat and dairy products, and where fat is needed in cooking use it sparingly.

Choose fats and oils containing monounsaturates (e.g. olive and rapeseed oils) and polyunsaturates (e.g. sunflower, corn and rapeseed oils) instead of saturates. In moderation these are not associated with an increased risk of heart disease – but still use them sparingly. There are two types of essential fats, which must be supplied by the diet in small amounts: omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. found in oily fish, walnuts, omega-3 enriched eggs, and rapeseed and soya oil) and omega-6 fatty acids (e.g. found in vegetable oils such as sunflower, corn and soya oil and spreads made from these).

Building healthy homes

Building healthy homes
Building healthy homes: Want to secure the health and life of your family at home?
And you thought your family and children were so safe inside the home environment cozily protected from potent health hazards! But did you know that the source of asthma, lead poisoning, and many such types of chronic health conditions could lie within your home environs?

According to recent survey it has been revealed that your family especially the kids are threatened with major health risks if the design/architecture, built and maintenance of your home is improper.

So while planning out a new home or a home remodeling/renovation make sure that your home planner or design architect makes use of healthier home building techniques and technology. This shall ensure that your family and kids residing in such healthy homes are much more healthier and safer!

You might incur higher expenses while constructing a healthy and environmental friendly home as compared to normal homes. But the health and life of your children and family is supposed to be of utmost importance above anything else!

So while you are busy with your home plans or home renovation ideas spare a thought on the following points to build a healthier and safer home.

· Budget your home plans keeping in mind that you have to use non-toxic or less toxic building materials that are a bit more expensive than general building materials.

· General building and construction materials (particularly glues, paints, varnishes, insulators, etc.) are usually loaded with toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as urea, formaldehyde, lead, asbestos, carbon monoxide, etc. derived from petroleum. If inhaled continuously these toxins accumulate in the body leading to serious health problems.

· While constructing cabinets and countertops or for sheathing, sub-flooring and roof decking the ideal choice is solid wood but if it is too expensive go in for exterior grade plywood only instead of particleboard/fiberboard that contains toxic glue mixed with wood chips.

· Avoid vinyl and wall-to-wall carpet flooring. Vinyl floors contain poly vinyl chloride (PVC) a harmful chemical while fully carpeted floors accumulates dust, dust mites, molds, etc. all of which are potent causative agents of allergy, asthma and other chronic respiratory problems. Instead use healthier floor alternatives as cork, solid wood, marmoleum, tiles, bamboo, and so on.

· Always make use of strictly low-odor and non-toxic paints containing highly reduced amounts of VOCs such as paints comprising of just clay and pigments. Paints are usually loaded with high quantities of lead. Avoid using such paints completely.

· Avoid using resins and glues that contain formaldehyde especially urea formaldehyde.

· To build the foundation, walls and roof panels of a healthy home make use of thick, natural, hygroscopic and breathable plasters and stuccoes such as clay-treated wood chip placed over sand and fine gravel instead of using foam boards or poly vapor barriers. This renders efficient indoor humidity control thus preventing the formation of molds. In this way you can also avoid the accumulation of harmful radon gas inside your home.

· Avoid building bedrooms/living rooms over the garage space of your house. Toxic gasoline fumes can outgas from the fuel tank of your car and infiltrate into the bedrooms.

· Install carbon monoxide testers/detectors especially near furnaces, fireplaces, and garage areas of your home. Radon testers must be essentially placed in the basement areas of your home as this harmful radioactive gas occurring in soil can seep into your home through the foundation.

· For construction of a healthy home only hire registered professional home planners and home builders/contractors who have the required knowledge of building and planning healthier homes based on strict building guidelines.

Get Healthy, Quit Smoking

Get Healthy, Quit Smoking
Once you start to smoke, there is no turning back. Nicotine is one of the most addictive, harmful, and widely used class of drugs in the world. Responsible for 440,000 deaths each year, tobacco and nicotine products still sell briskly almost anywhere — from corner stores, supermarkets, and liquor stores found all over the country. Since there are a variety of health problems linked to smoking, majority of the smokers actually want to get rid of their nicotine addiction. But as with any addictive habit, this is easier said than done. Most people who quit smoking experience withdrawal symptoms that makes it hard for them to quit completely.

There are certain reminders one must keep in mind when trying to quit smoking. First, try and pick a good time for quitting. Avoid quitting during the holiday season, during finals week, or right before a big presentation. Times like these gets the smoker's stress levels high, therefore making it even more hard for them to quit. Second, the smoker may gain a small amount of weight when trying to quit, which is considered normal. Most smokers gain between five to ten pounds after quitting due to their decreased metabolism that quitting nicotine can cause. Weight gains of more than ten pounds are usually caused by those who substitute food for their cigarettes. Lastly, be prepared to try and quit for more than once. A lot of smokers are not fully successful with their first trial to quit smoking, and needs a couple more tries before finally quitting for good. Like anything worth doing, it may take a while before a person gets it done.

Preparation is needed when one decides to quit. Setting up a date; removing all tobacco products and accessories like ashtrays, lighters, matches); letting friends and family members know about it; and talking to a doctor would be the best areas to focus on when quitting. All these will help in minimizing the importance of smoking, as well as giving the smoker a chance to quit without having too much trouble.

To further help a person trying o quit smoking, medications are available to help reduce nicotine cravings and may also relieve depression symptoms for those who may feel depressed during their “ordeal.” There are also nicotine patches available that provides a constant stream of nicotine to the system so that nicotine levels in one's system remains constant throughout the day. Nicotine gum is a replacement therapy that allows nicotine to be delivered to the bloodstream by being absorbed by the tissues in one's mouth. This often works for people who have an oral fixation of smoking. Nicotine inhalers are good for administering small doses of nicotine whenever cravings arrive. Lozenges slowly dissolves in the mouth as it releases nicotine into the bloodstream. Compared to nicotine gum, lozenges deliver nicotine to the brain quicker than the patch, making it easier to respond to nicotine cravings.

If one decides to quit smoking, several benefits would come along their way. It would decrease their risk of lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, chronic lung diseases, and a variety of other cancers. By quitting, this can help stop the effects of tobacco in one's appearance, including premature wrinkling, bad breath, stained teeth, yellow fingernails, and gum diseases. By quitting smoking, this could also decrease the health risk of loved ones, or those around one's environment. Get healthy and quit smoking!

Weight Loss, It Maybe More Healthy Than You Think

So you want to lose weight because you hate that you look fat and can walk up a flight of stairs without breaking into a major sweat and losing your breath for 5 minutes. You think that weight loss is the ticket to reenergizing your long lost love life. But let me tell you about a few other things that might persuade you to lose that 24 pack for a reason other than vanity.

Let's start by listing all of the other diseases that can be associated to obesity. Heart disease is probably the major one and shares associations with many of the others in the list. These include hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, and sleep apnea. Other things not necessarily related to heart are colon cancer, fatty liver, gynecomastia, irregular menstruation, breast cancer, uterine cancer, depression, joint pain and destruction, and heart burn. With each of these diseases carries with them a host of other complications, many of them that are life threatening or seriously debilitating conditions This is all not to mention the social stigmatism that hinders life in all arenas including personal life and career.

The great thing about weight is that it is not a permanent disability that has to be accepted. On the contrary it is very within the realm of possibility to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. Weight is not the only thing that goes either. With weight loss goes the increased risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, increased risk of cancer, depression, sleep apnea, and on and on. You also gain stamina, productivity, self-esteem, confidence, respect, and on and on.

So the question is why wouldn't you go out this minute and get your hands on the latest and greatest weight loss information that money has to buy. Or I have an even better way--that is to go to your family physician (who has the best information that money can by at his/her beckon call) and have him come up with a comprehensive to help you safely and effectively lose the weight in a very controlled environment with the best support money can buy. And the best part is that it is not your money that is doing the buying, its your insurance company's bank roll. They are glad to do it too and this should tell you that this is important. You see insurance companies know that it is in their best interest for you to lose weight and to keep it off--because it keeps you healthier and out of the doctor's office and the hospital.
